Intermediate Photoshop Elements

Sunday, March 14
9am-4:30pm

This class will explore layers, layer masks, and some of the most fun effects and filters. You’ll learn to make realistic composite pictures, and some that imitate drawing and painting. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop if you have your own copy of Photoshop Elements (version 6 or higher). (You can download a trial version for the Mac or PC at Adobe.com, downloads, trial downloads.) The program looks about the same on the Mac and PC, and works identically.

Batik

Saturday, April 17
9am-4:30pm
Cheryl Smeja

Cheryl will introduce you to batik dyeing, most highly developed on the island of Java in Indonesia. It is a traditional, wax resist method of drawing lines and dots on natural fabrics using a spouted, copper tjanting tool which dispenses melted wax. We will be using the new soy wax flakes which are fume free. Colors may be layered in sequence from light to dark, with wax coatings protecting each color, or each area can be outlined with wax and colored with dye. You’ll also use other tools to apply the wax such as cookie cutters, and copper stamps. You'll have a chance to use an authentic Indonesian Copper Batik Tjap, a very ornate copper stamp. Materials provided, but you are welcome to bring a 100% cotton garment to dye if you wish.
